GTA 6 Map Size: How Big Is It vs GTA 5 and RDR2?
Short answer: Rockstar has not published an official area. It says the GTA 6 map is about twice the size of GTA 5 and three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. The best community measurement puts the land area at about 82.7 km² (31.9 sq mi), roughly 1.66 times GTA 5.

What Rockstar has said
- The whole map is about twice GTA 5 and three times RDR2's playable area, per Rockstar North's Rob Nelson in comments from the August 2026 press preview (quoted by GTATracker).
- The main city alone is about twice the size of Los Santos, and the built-up area outside it is about eleven times the built-up area outside Los Santos (same source).
- A New York Times report also carried the "three times RDR2" and "city twice Los Santos" comparisons (summary by GTA Culture).
These are comparisons, not measurements. Rockstar did not say whether "twice GTA 5" counts water.

Figures come from different measurers and methods, so treat the older games as rough. GTA 6 and GTA 5 are from the same method, which makes that pair the fairest comparison. Unofficial and pre-release.
It depends on what you measure
The community mapping project measured both games four ways (gtadb.org FAQ). The more water you count, the closer GTA 6 gets to Rockstar's "twice GTA 5".

A separate measurement of a leaked full-map image, reported by VICE, came to 83.2 km² of land (1.69 times GTA 5). The mapping project says that image was measured at the wrong scale, and VICE notes it may show an older build.
What about Red Dead Redemption 2?
Published RDR2 measurements disagree by about a factor of two, from about 36 km² to 75 km² depending on method and on whether the original game's area counts (GTATracker, Game Rant). That is why the "three times RDR2" claim cannot be turned into a reliable GTA 6 number.

Yes. Rockstar says it is about three times the playable area of RDR2. Published RDR2 measurements vary a lot, so an exact ratio is not reliable yet.
